Heartlands Emotional Literacy Cards

To use these “EL” Cards as an interactive tool you are encouraged to be creative and to use them in a way that best suits your clients needs.

Please remember that each “EL” card can have totally different meanings for each client. It is for this reason that no attempt has been made to label or give individual to any of the “EL” cards.

One method is to :

1. To concentrate on a feeling currently in your clients life, (preferably one that your client has identified) for example, anger or loneliness.

2. Ask your client to choose three cards which symbolically represent their feelings in the present. Explore these “EL” cards with your client.

3. Then ask your client to select three “EL” cards that symbolically represent their feelings in the past. (Place these below the the present cards). Again explore these “EL” cards with your client.

4. Ask you client to select three “EL” cards which represent their hopes for the future with regards to their relevant feeling. (Place them above the present cards). Explore the future hope “EL” cards with your client.

5. You should then have three rows of three. You could then explore the differences and similarities between the rows with your client.

6. At this point, if your client is willing, you could ask them to:

  • Take some away and give them to you
  • Move the cards around
  • Place some in another part of the room

After each action explore your clients feelings. (This interactive process can be very effective with the 'pas't row).

7. From experience and feedback this interactive exercise can help your client to:

  • Connect with their feelings
  • Release old feelings
  • Clarify Issues
  • Give them focus
